Roy Herald Obituary

Roy Allen Herald, 89, of Petoskey, MI, quietly passed away on April 4, 2024.

He was born March 26, 1935 on a farm in Salem, Michigan to Homer and Alice Herald.

Roy graduated from South Lyon High School and went on to college at Eastern Illinois with a football scholarship. He later transferred to Eastern Michigan and graduated from there with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. His first teaching position was in Anchor Bay School in New Baltimore, Michigan.

Later Roy was hired by the State of Michigan at Hawthorne Center in Northville, Michigan working with Special Education children. He developed for his students one of the first “Work Activity Centers” in the state. While teaching at Hawthorne, he was honored to be accepted into U of M as a Special Education program graduate student and earned two master degrees, one in Special Education and one in Industrial Education.

Roy married Georgiana Enders, his high school sweetheart and together they raised three daughters, Kathleen, Margaret, and Lynn. His wife Georgiana preceded him in death on Valentine’s Day 2002.

On October 3, 2003, he married Carol Nyborg. They had 20 great years of marriage together. They were members of the Charlevoix Yacht Club and Roy served as Commodore in 2010. Roy also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and playing with Scupper their lovable Lab. His favorite hobbies were racing in regattas, woodworking, designing and building, and time spent with family and friends. They also spent their winters in Florida.

Roy was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Petoskey. His faith was very important to him. One special event was working with Zion Lutheran Church Disaster Relief group in Biloxi, MS to help and aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Roy was devoted to the Lord and now the Lord has answered his prayers.

Roy will be remembered as an intelligent person with a great sense of humor. He was creative and generous and will be missed dearly. He is now in the arms of our Lord and Savior, smiling down on those left behind.

He is survived by his wife Carol Herald of Petoskey; three daughters, Kathleen James (Terry), Margaret Mahlmeister (Roger) and Lynn Herald; 5 grandchildren Michael Dovey (Angela), Megan Spencer (Matt), McKenzie Mahlmeister, Rebecca Mahlmeister, and Madeline Mahlmeister. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, Violet, Levi, and Gavin Dovey, Carson, Thomas, and Edward Spencer; and a special niece Nancy Herald.

He was preceded in death by Georgiana Herald; his parents Homer and Alice Herald; brothers Russel and David Herald; and sister LaDonna Chapman.
